Sergeant Stubby
A Boston Terrier named "Sergeant Stubby" was a decorated World War I hero known for warning American soldiers against poisonous gas and imminent attacks on the Western Front. He was the mascot of 102nd Infantry Regiment 26th "Yankee" Division and the only dog nominated for rank and promoted to sergeant through combat by the U.S. Army.
